Found this on eBay last week and it ended without anyone buying it, so the guy relisted it again...  for the exact same price.  So, the question is then, is this a nice price or crack pipe?

If you need a gearbox for your application you are not going to be happy . Otherwise maybe . Personally I think they are over rated.

They do not cut fine grass well or poorly at best.

Looks like an early bolens version, it's belt driven from the pto, the later ones were direct shaft drive from the pto like the mower decks, As far as price I think it's a little high, looks like it's missing a few parts,

Yeah, if what is pictured is all he has, it's worth maybe $150.00 as a parts mower.

Yeah, I was going to say I was actually curious how you could even attach it to your Bolens tractor the way it is.  It definitely seems like it is missing something to mount it and get power to it.  What does the big front pulley go to?  Do you need something else to go from there to the front PTO pulley or are you supposed to take your PTO jackshaft off of your tractor and install this and run your PTO belt directly to this attachment?  It is definitely missing all the belts to make it work, but that shouldn't be too hard to remedy.  Is there anything else missing from it?

It's powered by a belt from the PTO pulley to the large pulley at the front of the mower.

The model 405 was for the very early tube frames like the 600 and 800. The 405A was an update and was powered by a PTO shaft.

Here's the 405 manual which shows how it's mounted, and all of the parts:

I'd say its overpriced.

There still seems to be a good amount of these floating around.
