Hi all, I have a question and hope to find an answer here...so, here goes.
My Neighbors 3-Legged Chihuahua runs up and down the fence faster than my Montgomery Wards Signature Series 2000 Elite Lawn Tractor. It's got the V-Twin 18Hp.B&S Motor, the 7-Speed Transmission, and winds out like an Enduro going down-Hill in 1st Gear. I swear it's doing 9K on the Tachometer and it will gulp 2 Gal. of Regular Unleaded in 15 minutes, and this is at 1/2 throttle with cutting height at 3 1/2" in 5th and 6th gear with a good healthy clean cut on the grass.
And why does this Unit not have a "Spliter" with a LO and a HI Range ?
I got it from a Repair Guy who said I was the 1st Guy He thought of, when He saw that B&S "Big-Block V-Twin sitting in that Dune Buggy of a Frame". $250.00 later and it's mine, Motor so-clean you would eat off of it, all original and all functional...just ScReAmS like a bAnShEe and won't get out of it's own way.Any Ideas on what I can do / look for - into ?   (0.0)

First thought is the governor is not working. Missing spring or improperly adjusted.

I'm not familiar with this set up, tractor or engine! Is this the original engine in there? Could the drive pulley(s) have been changed? That could account for the lack of speed in mowing. As far as the engine speed, sounds like governor issues.

Welcome to GTT. Check in the manuals section for the repair manual. You can download 3 for free.

Also to answer one of your questions. This was an MTD build tractor so they never messed with the high and low range transmissions. This was around the time when they came out with the shift on the go tranny and also gives you one extra gear to go along with it. The down side of these are that the axles are weak and since they have no good differential in it they are prone to constantly spin out unless you have wheel weights or fluid filled tires.

:welcometogttalk: , and :wewantpics:

Maybe take one of the wheels off so it will look like the 3-Legged Chihuahua.

If its not the governor i would check the rear drive tension pully next, i bet its not releasing the rear drive belt all the way.

Does anybody here have the Valve settings for the 16 MW.  It has a briggs I will post pictures soon.  Here are the numbers I have 326434-0134-01, 7209291

It worked for a couple of hours after I bought it and then it quit.  The starter has almost no power even with fresh battery.  I tried to manually start it and seems like I am not getting a spark I am checking the coil later today but might take a minute as it seems I might need to get the engine completely off the tractor to access the coil.

Thanks for any help,

JDM
