It appears to be a friction holding device of some sort, but I've never seen one like it on a GT.  The spring puts pressure on a pair of fiber discs that create friction to hold the shaft in place.  Possibly a hydro control hold?

 

oldcowhand had the right idea. It is a friction device for a hydrostatic drive cub cadet. It is used to maintain speed in forward or reverse. The for/rev handle mounts to this.

i would like to see what the small rod to the right in pic number two goes to. it kinda looks like the clutch relese mechanisim for my 1200 cub minus the clutch.

if that isnt it im going with kanooder shaft.

if its for a hydro tractor why would he have got it with a bumch of parts that came off the 70 an 122? all the parts he got go to both tractors so we were told

looks like it come off a 105 cub hydro I have a new set of friction disc for one.

Page 18 of a Cub 105 service manual will show you the speed control device. Apparently he got a few bonus pieces as well not related to a 70 or 122.
