Looking at a Wheel Horse RJ soon, and I have a few questions before I go.

ID tags and serial numbers : Where will I find them, what should I be looking for and what can they tell me?

Seller says it has a Chilton engine. Could this have been original and how can I know?

Are there certain parts like guards and mufflers, ect that are unique to these tractors that I need to look for?

Thanks Adam

Hey Adam,

I have an RJ-58 that has the K90 4hp Kohler on it. The Clinton motor was original to the RJ's, but I think they would have been earlier than 1958. I believe they would have been known as Ponds? You could be looking at an RJ-35 model. I'm not knowledgable on Wheel Horses like I am on John Deeres, so I'm only tellling you what I do know.

As for the serial tag, you will find it decaled to the left side frame rail (while sitting on the tractor) just behind the grille. I can't tell you the break points for each year, but I'm sure someone else will be along shortly.

The guards that you want to see on the tractor, and not missing are the muffler guard and the transmission drive belt guard located on the right side of the tractor, just below your thigh while sitting on the tractor. These guards can be rather pricey if missing. Having fenders included with the tractor would be an added plus.

Good Luck!

The Clinton engine (if a 1200) would've been an option from 1954 through 1957. If a 1290, it's was an option on the 1958 and 1959 RJ. As Troy mentioned above, the guards are a great find if they're on it, and a pricey endeavor if they're not. The earlier models (RJ 25 and RJ 35, 1954 through 1957) wouldn't have a transaxle, but a variable speed belt assembly that's very collectable and fairly rare. Make sure that you post up some pictures when you bring it home!

Do you know if your tractor is a rj35 or a rj58? If you can get the belt guards to it, you aren't gonna find them anywhere else. Recently belt guards on ebay have gone for over 200 bucks on the 58-59 rj's. the 58-59 will have the serial tag on the frame under the gas tank but it is usually gone or unreadable. On a rj35 there never was a serial tag. here is a pictures of both so you could tell me which one it is if you didn't know. ~Jake

this is a rj35

The seller is not very discriptive and hard to get ahold of. All I know is he has a Wheel Horse RJ with Clinton engine. If or when he calls me back to come take a look at it I probably wont know what it is till I see it.

Cant believe that I wanted to wait till the next day. Early the next morning got a text. Sold.
There is one word to describe what I did. > DOPE. Good luck,,,,,,,,hope you score it.
