Maybe a stupid one. What was the reasoning behind the "tube" frame on my FORD LGT100?

 

 

 

 

I can't even spell "question" right.

My Ford LGTs and Bolens are tube frames. The tube is more stiff in every direction than an angle iron per pound. As an engineer, I know that a tube is theoretically better for many  applications. Unfortunately, erection and connection costs are often higher. As a firm believer in KISS, I design for the easier fabrication and erection. I've saved alot of money on projects this way. I comes down to the designers preferrence and imagination.

Sounds like a good answer to me! It is harder to bend a tube.

Boyscout862: that makes a lot sense. Now being a racing fan is the reason tubes are used in racecar construction that the tube frames are also lighter that square material  and structured beams?

If you are talking about protection during a roll, the round tube gives you the same strength in every direction. I haven't used my steel manuals in several years. I will try to find one later today to give you an example.

The strength is superior with tubes. Glad to meet another LGT 100 owner!

I looked up an example: 2" round has the same weak axis strength as 2" square but the square weighs 16% more. Since they want to keep the weight down the tubes make sense.
