http://columbia.crai...3586050669.html Is a plow blade and reel mower very rare? Would this be a good deal?

The plow isn't that rare, but the reel mower would be rare in my opinion.

I don't see the plow blade. But, they are not rare. The reel mower is somewhat rare. But, reel mowers and sycle bar mowers were much more the norm in those days. I'd say that's a reasonable/good price for that depending on what the local market is. Joe

Is that an RJ? I have a 58-RJ, which looks simular to this one, but my front axle is straight. Maybe I don't have what I thought I did.

This one should be a "Suburban", if I'm not mistaken.

It appears to be a 1960 suburban 550.  Getting harder to find especially in this shape.   The reel mower is a rare item.  They usually bring $300 by themselves in complete working condition.  It would be a good score for a collector!

I agree on it being a 1960( dropped front axle). The 400 didn't have a key, starter, or the rounded footrests. They were reserved for the 551.

I think it's a real good deal.  The guy said he just drove it around, so it must run decent.

Maybe I should consider it. If I decide on it, what should I look for? What would be the origanl engine? I'm a DB guy so, this would be new territory for me.

The engine on it sure looks like a Lauson/Tecumseh to me. Of the round hoods that had the dropped front axle ([1960] 400, 550, [1961] 551, and 701), only the 550 and the 551 had that make on them. they're basically the same engine, an H55, but the 550 would be a model H55B-1170 and the 551 would be H55D-2113. I hope that this helps and best of luck if you decide to bring it home! BTW, that reel mower is a rare find and would make a great addition to ANY collection IMHO!

Are my eyes deceiving me here?? Troy has a red tractor? There may be hope yet!    poke.gif
