Not sure about the "needs a head gasket" part but beyond that, this looks to be a great GT. Especially if you could talk him down.

Very nice shape, but I am wondering if it isn't an older restore... with no decals on the hood & all.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but ST18?  the head gasket statement is a little bit of a red flag for me.  I think it could also be the same symptoms with a bad (expensive) coil

I've heard you can use an older Harley coil that is cheaper.

Yes you can use an after market $30 Harley Davidson coil.Just make sure you get a coil for a Points ignition engine. Most Harleys Up to 1978 used points so that's an easy find.

Blown head gasket on an Onan?I've had quite a few Onans and not a single one of them ever blew a head gasket.I've had one run so hot that it welded the rings fast to the piston and it never blew the gasket. That was one very used and abused Onan in an old Bobcat skid loader.

Bet it's either the Coil,Fuel pump, very dirty carb.Could be worse than that to,his Description of it is very lacking.

ST18? No such thing that i know of. I have only seen SS18 or then GT18 name in 78. Its definitely an onan and yea probably coil. Someone has done some nose/hood repair as I can see bolt heads on side of hood that dont belong

This guy has about 20 ads on CL trying to downsize a mower shop, his prices are a bit steep IMO.

Yes, I meant SS... Typed ST intentionally, but meant SS... I will plead a lack of intelligence. :D I suppose it could be a SS16 without the decals or motor /tractor model number we only have his word it's an 18
