Paper gaskets always get this first for me Permatex_80019_14_Pint_Aviation_Form-A-Gasket_No_3_Sealant.jpg

And black Permatex in a tube for anything else. Even after cleaning I've had leaks due to uneven surfaces, so it's cheap insurance, beats having a leak anyday.

I used to use Aviation all the time, but disassembly after using always destroys the gaskets.  The stuff I use allows easy re-use of gaskets, but Aviation used to be my 1st choice.  Just don't get that stuff on your hands!!!

I agree with using Aviation or High Tack -- the version that comes in a can w/a brush (not the spray variety),  or Indian head.

on head gaskets (not usually the small engine variety though) depending on gasket material, I sometimes use the spray copper coat.
