John, sounds like a good idea on the tubes, but I'm not a huge fan of the fictional attachment method...

The kind that's hard! :bigrofl: Steel would be easiest to work with. Aluminum if you can get it and weld it.

P.S. somewhere between 1/16"- 1/8" steel wall tubing is what I would use.
