recently acquired a mf/snapper 16/18 series tractor....not sure of actual branding or year or make due to no serial plates..

after getting it home I have noticed a few issues I could use some help with

1. motor has been replaced with Briggs 16 hp

2.  Runs reverse when depressing forwards and vice versa

3.  Runs faster in reverse than forward.

4.  do the onan and briggs motors rotate a different direction than each other?

Thanks for all help and advice in advance..

:welcome: to GTTalk!

It almost sounds like the Original engine and the replacement engine were orientated the other way around.

If you happen to have a picture or three, it might help the more knowledgeable guys help you.

Sounds like the motor rotation is backward. Dony worry, this can be fixed. This tractor wasnt the one on Craigslist over near Denton was it?

Hello Jim

Welcome to GTTalk!  Great to have another fellow from NC here!  By chance did you get this machine with two others from somewhere around Greensboro?

I don't know enough about this series to help, but there are a bunch of knowledgeable guys here that should be able to help.

Hi, and welcome to GTT.

Are you saying you have either a MF1655, or MF1855?

If so, sorry I can't help you out engine wise, as I've only got the 1450 and1650. They have Kohlers.

It would help others that know, if you could post some pics of the engine etc.

I will post up close up pictures when I get home either today or tomorrow

yes it is the one that was on CL near Denton....got a better deal than posted and already sold the other two mowers I really only wanted the MF anyways

I was thinking the same thing about the motor rotation being an issue.  Im looking to rehome an 18-20 hp on it anyways..just not sure which one..but if the 16hp briggs on it can be utilized it would save me some money to spend on restoring..

Thanks and I will post up pics asap

The rest of the pics...

Seems to have a few modified/non factory reconfigurations..looking to put it back to original

the rear pto is out and I don't have the connector sleeve

the mower deck is out and no short shaft or front pulleys

Somebody liked john deere green and painted to items..

harness is butchered and key no longer works so it has a switch and push button start

trans cooler and lines were added   I want to do away with that

and as stated in previous post   forward is reverse and reverse is forward...looking at the motor it appears to have been installed backwards to make the shafts work.......can I turn it around and find adaptors, etc.... to make it run correctly

thanks everyone

The engine is oriented correct, as the hydro is to be driven off the flywheel side.  Not sure what's up with the backwards controls, so someone must have monkeyed around with the control linkages.

Looks like you're making some small progress, finding out what is what.  I thought the trans cooler looked aftermarket.  It's a shame the thing is running backwards.

I'm a bit surprised that the motor runs backward, I thought all motors ran the same direction.  I wonder if the motor is installed backwards from what the original was.

The engine is hooked up right. HAS to be something with the linkages I'd say.  A close-up pic of all the linkages at the hydro unit will tell the tale most likely.

I don't know, but isn't the face plate of the hydro reversible? As in rotating it 180* ?

I am glad  you got it but I sure hate I missed it. I have been wanting the Massey version, i have two of the snapper versions. The splined couplers can sometimes be found at surpluscenter.com. That can get your rear PTO going. You got some great goodies with that purchase and these things are a beast. I am thinking that the charge pump on the hydro got reversed. There is a  manual for the sundstrand 15 series hydro here in the manual section.  I think my 1855 engines turns CW looking at the flywheel end.

Great score, glad you got it and found your way here to GTtalk.
