I have no clue but that is one rugged unit.

I am leaning to what Bob and Cat are thinking.

That square shaft extension looks interesting, Maybe it is a PTO unit? Maybe this bolts under the machine, duel belts from the engine turn this unit then a yoke (or coupler) goes on the square shaft to mount the drive shaft?

What ever it maybe it is HD.

As noted, one on my MTD 990. Goes below the engine, the belt drops straight down to it, then the shaft to mower or ? slips on the square end of that shaft. Pretty simple! I'm sure it is a common generic part used on many things tho, not just the MTD's. It has bearings and grease in it, no gears or anything else.
