I just split the reduction gearbox on my HB112 so I could replace the drive/neutral shift stem. Now, when I turn the wheels, there is silence at first but then there is what I assume is gear noise. Are both the silence & noise normal? If not, what should I be looking for?

Sounds like it's coming from the planetary differential on the right axle???? Kind of appears like the noise starts when the 2 rear wheels start turning at different speeds. May be time to take a look inside the diff.

Boy does that sound like a gear hitting the case...
I don't have one of these, but I would say no, that's not normal.

One question, I have never had one of these but did it do this after you replaced the shaft? It sounds like you are in between gears? like something is not adjusted correctly and 2 gears are just barley touching one another?

I could be way off. but the sound seems real familiar to me.

I just figured I would throw another option your way. But Daniel and Alan's suggestions sound like they could be correct also.

Like Alan it sounds like the one of the gears is hitting something. What ever it is it takes it a second or two get to a point where it can not move and the gear starts riding over it. Like Daniel said sounds like time to open her up.

Sounds like maybe one of the spider gears is missing some teeth and they get to just the right spot and one starts riding over the other. Like most other posters I believe it is time to take a look inside.

Thank you for all your input. It wasn't the spider gears (see video). I re-split the gearbox & examined the gears, shafts & housing for damage. There wasn't anything obvious. I then messed around with the axle tube and, well, the noise disappeared (see video).

Glad to hear (or not hear) it.
What was it that you messed with?

The axle tube. Basically, I pulled on the right rear wheel to get a better view of the guts. When I pushed it back into place, the noise was gone.
