Here is an interesting project that came into my shop. My tractor buddy who finds and brings back old tractors came across this Farmall A. He had a hint of what it was but didn't know for sure. We did the research and confirmed that this is a Super A and was one of the white painted demonstrator models that IH had built in the first 3 months of 1950. IH had those 3 months production of Super A and Super C tractors along with a hay baler and a couple of other pieces of equipment painted white in 1950 for their advertising of a half century of progress. When the tractors were sold the dealership was to paint the tractors the regular IH red. As you can see in the pictures this Super A is showing a lot of white patches where the red paint has been scratched or fallen off. The underside of the hood over the engine didn't even get painted!
Another different thing about this tractor is that almost every Super A came with a live hydraulic rockshaft mounted under the gas tank for lifting the attached implements. This one must have been ordered without hydraulics on it as it has none of the hydraulic parts on it and the correct hydraulic delete pieces.
It had sat for a long time and had been kind of cobbled on in it's lifetime. After getting the magneto rebuilt and some TLC I got it running pretty well. The back tires were in very nice shape but the front ones were shot so they were replaced. My friend wants to keep this tractor and wants me to get all the leaks fixed, quite a few of them. Also get it rewired, charging system working, steering fixed, front engine seal, brakes and rear axle seals replaced and then he is going to have it repainted in the white demonstrator paint scheme.
Here are some pictures as it sits now. I am going to be tearing it down now and will post pictures when it gets done being painted.

That is something that I would love to have one day, whether I have a use for it or not. Your buddy made one heck of purchase, there. Best of luck on the work needed, and thanks for keeping us in the loop.

That looks like its goingto be a good project. We have a Super A. They are very good tractors. Ours has the Touch-Control hydraulic system. We mowed lawn with it for about 8 years but now the Cub Cadets have pretty much taken that job over. Now it occasionally gets a workout raking hay and hauling wood.

The demo models are rare enough that will make an interesting restore.

My tractor buddy has checked with a couple of IH collectors he knows and they say that the white demonstrator tractors are worth up to 3 times the value of a regular Super A. I don't know if that would be the case or not with this one as it is minus all of the hydraulics. It might make it more rare but what effect that has on the value seeing it is missing one of the bigggest things that made a Super A over a regular A
I don't know.
I'll take some pictures as it comes apart and goes back together. The painting might not happen until next spring.

They are pretty tractors in that paint scheme. Really stand out in a crowd.
There are a couple of them around here at the shows (A Super A and I think a bigger one... C?)

Tell your buddy congrats.

Spooky! Kind of like a ghost tractor! Very nice project!
