On my mobile compressor the valve that regulates when the engine idles would not go all the way in. The valve would leak until the tank was empty; however, you could push it with your finger and it would stop until you let go.

So, I took it apart and cleaned it with brake cleaner. It was VERY dirty inside! I put it back on and adjusted it so that it would build up the desired pressure before the engine would idle. But, when the engine is at idle the valve will jump back and forth between open and closed. This causes the engine to kick up the RPMs and then back down. It would do this once or twice a second.

What do you think the problem is? Could it just be sticking? If I take it apart again and lube it, would it help?

This is the valve in question.

I would disassemble it again, clean it and make sure it it clean and dry. When you put it together, make sure you DO NOT get any teflon tape or "pipe dope" inside the assembly. If it still acts up, trash it and get a new one.

When you've got it apart, check the spring. They tend to corrode and weaken with time.

I would replace it with new. This can be a safety issue. I don't relish the thought of becoming a statistic just yet.
