It seems a lot of aluminum parts have been showing up on ebay lately including aluminum bell housings and rear differentials. Were these off special models or is this just what they had? Also an unrelated question to the topic but is every rear geared the same? Are 16 and 24 models geared the same? Obviously the final gear ratio is higher on 24s because of taller tires but are the gears in the differential and final drives the same or different? Are different years geared differently for different horsepowers? Only reason I really ask is my 64 with the 9hp Briggs is slower in my high than my 77 with a 14 Kohler is with 24s. Would a 77 with a 14 Kohler and 16s be as slow or did the rears get sped up? The 77 has I believe a Dana type rear because its not like the Ford Model A type rear but not like the Spicer in my 77 and 89.
To my knowledge, they used 4 difference rears with slight differences on the later rears such as aluminum housing. They had the ford differential, the larger Dana,a limited amount of tractors had a smaller Dana ring & pinion with an X at the end of the serial #,this would have been around 1970 and there was a 12.25-1 installed in some Jim Dandys as opposed to the 5:17-1 in the other models, not sure of the exact ratio on the Ford models but was close
There were a limited number of aluminum flywheel housing cast for Charles Korff. He was the largest PK dealer and was into pulling tractors and they were made for him so that he could distribute the weight where it was needed.
