I was at a plow day Saturday & mentioned to a friend that I was planning to go to an auction next week in hopes of getting a JD #56 RER for a Winter project I have in mind. He told me he could do better, how about free! He called his local JD dealer, who had gotten in some RER's that "ran when they were parked". None were running now, but he would give me one to save it going to the scrap yard. They would set one out so we could pick it up after closing. When we got there, there was a model 68 rider setting there that looked pretty sound, other than the seat & tires.

Even had the "optional" Redneck mulching attachment! :D

Today, I took the bowl off the carb., pretty nasty! Tried a little carb cleaner & it ran, starter is stuck, will need replaced (recoil start works). Carb went to the shop for cleaning & re-build. I may fix this one up for a backup mower & for shows & still try to get the 56 for the project I have in mind!

I'll post progress here as I go along. ~~ Lowell

To think someone was going to scrap it. What a shame. Nice score.

As said above, free is always good.

For what it's worth, I picked up the Operator's Manual (Serial Number 222,001 - ) for the 68 Riding Mower at a local auction last year (along with a number of other JD manuals. If anyone would like a copy, send me a PM with your E-mail address, and I will scan the manual in and send you one.

Lowell,

Does it have the 6hp Tecumseh in it? Really nice score if it does, as we both know how hard it is to find those motors without a hole in the block. Congrats!

No, it's an 8 HP Briggs! The model 66 should have the 6 HP Tecumseh, also the 56 that I'm going to see about this weekend would be the 6 HP Tecumseh.

Took the deck off & gave the mower a good pressure washing today & put a tube in the tire that wouldn't hold air today. So now I can move it around easier. ~~ Lowell

If mine had a Tecumseh in it, I'd give it away.

Tecumseh is great. Never had problems with one yet.
