This is some how to video about making an old motor run better. Valves tend to carbon up and or pit over time. One of the things I will do for and old tractor motor is to remove the head, clean up the carbon buildup from it, and to clean-reseat the valves.

I use the finish or fine valve grinding compound. I have also chucked up a rubber cup like the one in the video into a power drill motor to turn the valve. Remember to run the drill motor on SLOW if you do it this way.

Just a little different for spring removal on those old bolens tecumseh hh series, end up making a compression tool from an old set of training wheels,

Got an over head spring compression tool from princes auto, see if that works better

Have you a picture of the tool you made that you could add to your post Jehtro? I could only find video of the tool for the briggs.
