OK , I have a 9 HP Honda clone Runs great once you get it started! And basically...... well.... starts like it should if........ YOU COULD KEEP THE DANGED PULL START TOGETHER!!!!!!!!!!!!! Dang it!!! What is wrong with this thing! I even put on a branded new Honda assembly and it killed that one too !! It blows the dogs apart destroying the pulley and dog cover???? I'm about to put electric start on it, but even that's not easy as it has no ring gear or hole for the Bendix....
I guess you get what you pay for...

Knowing you, Keith, it won't be long and you'll have a fix figured out. Got any pics of the carnage? Might help give some ideas of what to do. How about an air starter hooked to the crank nut?

Have you checked the valve lash. I have seen valve adjustment issues kill electric starters too.

Well at least I'm not alone .. I will need to check the valves then? And I'll snap a shot tonight of the carnage. This is nuts, I've spent more on recoil parts then the actual engine!!! And what hurts is it runs soooo good when it starts. :(

Check the starter cup on the flywheel too. I had a damaged one on a polaris 4 whrl grab the rope starter and wreck it. It was my fault, I thought I could use it as a flwheel puller. I thought it would come off with a little coaxing, but ended up bending the cup. I beat it back in shape and put it on. It worked for a while. The battery died and I rope started it. it fired right up and I backed it out of the shop, then as I was closing the door, all hell broke loose. starter blew up and killed the motor. I thought I was gonna have to rebuild the engine again, turns out it was only the starter. New cup, used rope starter and I was back in buisness.
