So what's a fair price to ask for a 60" John Deere deck? One came with my 420, but it's too big for my yard and I'm tired of tripping over it.

I've never had it on, so I don't know how well it works. There's some rust, but no cracks. It turns. Everything is there.

Should I sell it as is, or should I rebuild it and get it fixed up and pretty? Would that make a big difference in price?

Do you plan to keep the 420 forever? Having a deck when/if you decide to sell would be a plus!

The 420 does everything I need it to, so I do plan to keep it forever. I know plans change, as do situations, but the tractor is the right size and has the right options for me. Plus I don't have room for the deck indoors, so by the time I do need it, it'll be rusty and worthless. There's that whole trip factor too...almost broke my neck carrying stuff our from behind the shed. I really hate to that to a perfectly good piece of equipment. Better to sell it to somebody who can use it.

I have seen them sell from several hundred bucks up to over a 1000.00 depending on what kind of shape they are in.

Rev, if it were mine, I wouldn't be uncomfortable with starting the asking price at $500.00, going by the condition you described.

Funny you said that, Elfman. I asked $500, got $400. Likely could have gotten a bit more, but this way was quick and painless.
