Are horizontal motors better because of torque? I could easily convert the allis to horizontal if I came across say a 20hp vertical shaft engine.

Torque is torque no matter the orientation of the crankshaft.

Did you get the terms reversed in your statement?

vertical and horizontal are very different
if you turn a vertical into a horizontal or a horizontal into vertical they will not last very long
oiling the motor is the problem even it it a pressurize
the oil have to drain to the bottom of the motor to get pumped or splashed round inside

some parts must exchange but not many because of how they are designed

they are exactly the same for power. So there is no point changing it

The reason would be... A messed up 10hp k series that's bad and a 20hp vertical sitting on the shelf.
