Does anyone know what year & model this tractor is? I just picked it up from an older gentleman in NC for $150.

Is that the ID plate that can be seen under the dash in the last picture?

It might also be on the left side above the lift lever and the same height as the plate or decal below the dash. I'm looking at the first picture now.

It's a 1966 856 (8=original hp, 5=3-forward speeds with electric start, 6=1966. You can download the operator manual from the Files of

Looks like it's a 1966

856 1966 Lawn & Garden Tractor 856 4-Speed Kohler K181S-30108D 8 Wheel Horse 5053

Thanks for the help GWest

I was in NC last week and stumbled onto Carolina Fly-wheelers Antique Tractor Show there was a little girl riding around on an old Wheel Horse pulling four wagons with a child in each wagon. My wife said I needed to get a tractor like that for our new grandson. Anytime you get spouse support a buy an old tractor you jump on it so I purchased the one above before she changed her mind.

Amen to that Jasper! That's a nice looking find too! I have the same snow plow under my 314, though in NC it's probably not used for snow!
