According to the original paperwork I have for my 2012, it is Serial No. 001061, Engine Model No. 310421, Engine Serial No. 66111 and Engine Type 0120-01.
The engine decodes:
31= 31 cu.in.
0 = Design Series
4 = Horizontal Shaft
2 = Sleeve bearing, flange mounting splash lube
1 = Rope starter
However, when I go to parts websites such as Parts tree.com, I cannot find the model among the hundreds of Briggs & Stratton engine models listed. Is the model no. I have mislabeled? Where do I find the number stamped on the engine?

You have written something down incorrectly. The 310000 series engine has a vertical shaft.

Here is the proper engine number: 300421-0120-01

If you use 300421-0120-99 you will find manuals on the Briggs home page.

I don't know what to say. I was just trying to be helpful. If I was a betting man, my money would be on 310421 being a "typo".

Where do I find the number stamped on the engine?

It should be stamped into the blower housing. You'll have to examine it carefully because paint sometimes obscures the numbers. On my 10 hp engine, the numbers are located on the carburetor side at about the level of the crankshaft. You can see in the pic below, where I scratched the paint off the blower housing to be able to read the numbers.

I also have 13 hp engines with the numbers located on the opposite side of the blower housing, at about the same level. My 16 hp engines have the numbers stamped into the top of the housing. I believe you'll probably find the numbers on your engine on the carburetor side, but if not, check the other places.

I also believe that you'll find the model is 300421.
