After buying a donor tractor over 8 years ago, I finally took the time to mash all the parts together and make it work. Mowed the lawn with it this afternoon for the first time in probably two decades. It was a real throwback.

Never mind that no moving parts are from the original tractor. The engine, transaxle, driveshaft, wheels, and PTO are all from the donor. Had I realized I had that much to do, I would have just pulled 3rd gear out of my tractor and put it in the donor. Of course, the parts didn't all fail at the same time, so in the end this was probably the best way to go.

All I need to do now is fix the electrical. I've replaced the regulator 3 times, and smoked it 3 times, so I'm thinking I better try something else before I go broke. I've got a couple generators lying around. Anyone know of a good way to bench test one of those?

I read the info posted above, but I have no way to measure the speed of the generator at no load. That said, I tested the "best" generator I have (best = one that spins freely). When I put 12 volts to it, it spins. When I attach the belt to the motor and apply 12 volts, it hums but doesn't spin. Of course, the battery is questionable too, but I think I need the generator rebuilt. Time to look through the yellow pages for a local electrical repair shop. I found a rebuilt one on the net for $200, so hopefully a rebuild will be cheaper.

The good news is I've used the 800 to mow some brush, grade some dirt/mulch, and I'm about the rototill this weekend. I forgot what a beast this little tractor can be. Fun stuff.
