I've had a thread on the Craftsman forum about trying to find a new pulley for a splined shaft on my tractor. pictures 1/2 way down. Anyways, I have about given up :wallbanging:on the right part existing & will have to modify the shaft. I'll really have to gut the transmission to take the shaft out to put in a keyway. Any ideas? The spline is HARD stuff. I thought about a sleeve/compression pulley, but I can't find one with enough offset (see picture). Any thoughts on a set-screw holding up?:confuse: Kinda open to new ideas on this one. Thanks in advance.

On those really hard shafts, the best way to cut a keyway is with a stone, like a dremel cutoff wheel. If there's room to use a larger diameter stone, then an air cutoff tool works well. I've cut keyways in hardened shafts this way a few times & always held up well. Just requires taking your time to be sure all is correct depth & width. If things ger a bit off kilter, you can make a key to fit.

I took all the worn-out 3" cutoff wheels for my air grinder & made them the same, right size. Blade is just shy of 1/8" Slow & steady...Worked great.
