I have received a reply from Brown&Sharpe after I sent photos.

"Ron,
That is impressive! I have never seen anything like this before. I will check around with some senior guys to see if they have any recollection of such a piece being produced for us.
I'll be in touch."

Now we wait and see. I'm sure it was produced by B&S or it was consigned by them. The quality is to good as not to be.

Stand by for future updates.

It is metal.
It is made of several pieces and is all machined, not cast.

Update!

"Ron,

The last time that I can see when we showcased a #24 micrometer was in our 1938 catalog. The next one I have in my collection is 1950 and it is no longer shown there. No one else here is familiar with any exact model show pieces like this. This is an interesting novelty of which I have no experience with. When you came into possession of this, was there any documentation with it? Perhaps that may supply clues that I can connect the dots with?"
My Reply;

The micrometer is shown in my 1941 catalog.
I bought this at the Webster Florida flea mkt. this past Monday. The older gentleman that sold it to me is an avid tool collector and dealer. I was so excited to find this that I didn't question the man about it. Stupid me. The next time I see him, which could be several weeks, I will give him the 3rd degree.
It seems like this could be an interesting piece of B&S history.

Thank you for your time and I hope to hear more from you.

Ron

Very neat piece Ron. I am now subscribed as I would love to hear more of the history behind it as well.

The latest;
To help further investigation I e-mailed this,

Any chance of putting a picture and dialog in the company news letter?

Thanks,

Ron
The reply;

Perhaps after we can substantiate its relevance to our past with documentation. Brown & Sharpe is now a brand of Hexagon Metrology. Anything that would be highlighted in our newsletters is approved through HQ in Sweden.

If you can obtain documentation that I can connect to us, it may be a nice "reminder story" of our past as we continue to evolve within the industry.

It seems odd that it is in an old catalog, but he wants documentation connecting to them.

I am both thrilled and a little surprised that you were able to make a connection with an actual person at the company who was willing to put in a little leg work for you! This is a great story and I will be watching as it unfolds! Thanks for keeping us in the loop!

You don't expect the Jolly Green Giant to measure with a piddly little tool do you.

Very interesting read. I hope you are able to track down the seller, and glean some more info outta him. Hopefully someone sees this on a googly search and can supply some more info.
