A long time ago, a fella told me it was a good idea to type your name into search engines once in a while to see what comes up. It's always been one of those, I'm bored and there's nothing else to do things.

Last night I did it again. Got a bunch of hits from a service called spokeo. (spokeo.com)
It's a service that mines public data for your name and creates a profile. One stop shopping for someone who wants to know more about you... Just type in your name, or address and tada, info.

The free version had more info than I wanted out there, let alone what the pay version would offer. (it's only like $4 for a limited time membership) so I started looking for how to get my info off there. At the bottom of your profile is a little "privacy" button. Copy the address bar of your profile and click the privacy button, at the bottom of the next page is a place to paste in the address bar info and then type in your email addy (they will send a link to delete that profile) You DO NOT have to join to do this.

I had 5 derivations or my name and 3 of my wife's. All with roughly the same info (a lot of it was wrong, but that's not any better in some cases). Even one of my kids were on there.

I know all this info is out there still, but no reason to make things easy for nosey or bad people by having it all in one place.

I agree, way to easy to get personal info now. This type of personal info is too detailed.

But I have found, when I am buying on craigslist, it is nice to google a phone number or name to see if it is legit. Did it this past week on some tires..... Guy was inconsistent getting back with me and was not sure what was going on. googled his name and he showed up as a Police officer.....so figured he was working odd hours......

It's AMAZING what you can find out about someone with very little info.

Someone forwarded me some stuff they found on someone that was busting their stones.

In a matter of mins, they found the guys address, all those that live at that address, real estate tax records and much more.

It's actually crazy and a bit scary.

There is no such thing as "privacy" anymore.

My name is almost the most common one in the English speaking world. I can only imagine what I get blamed for.

My name is so common that I get in trouble for it. I got stopped by a police office who was just checking on the load of aluminum rims I had on the trailer and he ran my name and asked when I was in prison. I told him I never had been. He asked if I was sure. I told him a man would remember something like that. There were about 20 other guys with my name in the prison system and many of them had outstanding felony warrants.

I'm pretty safe right now... all the results I found were facebook, honor rolls at college, GTTalk articles and other things to be expected of my search. With my name I have a lot of uniqueness to find me with. I looked on http://www.webmii.hk/ and found basic information for myself and my internet presence. It found me pretty good, but not good enough. Alan wasn't easy to find at all by that search engine.

George Orwell called this one bang on.
It's certainly is a bit disturbing to know that there is no more privacy.

The only thing I found with my name attached to it was my MENSA membership and my affiliation with Shoddy Industries International Corp.

Alan, I am surprised you are concerned, as you don't have your name out there in very many places. Besides, who would want you when there is a guy with your name working on "Squidbillies" staff LMAO.

As I suspected, I was born and incarcerated in quite a few different places.
