Just getting ready to do some serious work on my '73 990, which is not running right now because I have parts and pieces off the engine, but I have a question on the hydro rear end that someone may be able to help with.

On my '82 990, I can move the selector lever between hi and low range, and the rear end is free wheeling so I can push it around. When I tried the same move on the '73, it won't budge. I know on my Craftsman that there is a rod on the rear that has to be pulled out to disengage the hydro, but I see nothing like that on the 990. Should I be able to put it in "neutral" and move it, or am I SOL without the engine running? Kinda heavey to just pick up and move around!

Thanks for the help,
Rich

Larry likely has it right, a stuck brake. Free that brake, and she'll likely roll. The neutral in the final drive allows freewheel, with no need to unload the hydro.

Finally got around to checking the brake today.

Yup - When rebuilding the tractor, I put new pads in and cleaned the disc. I must have tightened the pressure bolt on the pad a bit too much and it wasn't releasing. Backed that off a bit, loosened the two main bolts, and the disc turned freely. Put the trans in neutral, and rolled it out of the shed just like it should have.

Next time I'll check for the obvious first (no I won't).

Thanks again,
Rich

I'll bet, next time, the brake is the first thing checked!
