tins look to be in great shape. if the deck is in good shape It'd be fun to pick it up for about half this price and drop a small diesel in it.

That's in good shape. I think they had an Onan 20hp in them. I looked at one last year but it was not in that kind of condition.

I saw an ad on craigs about a year ago for an old cub for sale, a 149. I went to see it and the guy also showed me a 682 in his garage that was in really nice condition. It was his show tractor, he said. He had taken the KT17 out of it (broken connecting rod) and put in a series 2 KT17. He said they had a lot of problems with the first motor and re-engineered the motor with better oil pressure and called it a series 2.

I look at that and "needs engine" and think it ran out of gas,
he cranked till the battery went dead, and concluded the engine was Siezed.
I only say that because i've seen it before!
I would not automatically assume it needs an engine.

That would be correct.

The 682 had 17 hp kohlers (KT-17). The Onan's were in the 982's.

That is what all of my research has told me as well. My 682 is a series 2 engine.

good call... I might have to check this out. I picked up two mowers that the PO's thought they were junk (one of them being my Craftsman II that i trim mow with) and all they needed was gas and batteries.
