I stumbled onto a trick regarding an H60 that has been a thorn in my side. I made several wrong guesses, but I think we're all guilty of it. :)

This engine has been sitting in the weeds for 15 years at my inlaws house. I rescued it one day and put it inside to look at when I got the chance.

At first, i though this engine had a bad crank. To pull it over with the rope starter was an effort. Come to find out, I don't think it was used much as it has mad compression. Then I got to looking over the spark situation. It had spark... "yippee" Not the best spark, but it's a spark.
(that yippee will come back to bite me soon)

RIgged another carb onto the engine with some creative leeway and an "adapter" plate... just wanted to hear it pop. (remember I said this) Stuffed a muffler on it & started pulling.
Choke on, Pull, pull, pull *pop*
Half choke pull, pull, pull, *pop pop pop*
pull, pull, pull, pull, pull, pull, pull, pull, pull, pull, pull, pull, *pop*
pull, pull, pull, pullpullpullpullpullpullpull *pop*
PULLPULLPULLPULLPULLPULLPULLPULLPULLPULLPULL *pop pop*
PULLPULLPULLPULLPULLPULLPULLPULLPULLPULLPULLPULLPULLPULLPULLPULL *pop*
Gasp-wheeze-swear.

Pulled the plug, pulled the rope and it has spark, same as before. Changed the plug and started over.

About 30 minutes and 3 heart palpitations later, I was drenched and done.

Next nite I decided to take the flywheel off & clean the points. The condenser is one I don't have, and it looks great... brand new almost, a little pitting on the points... filed clean. Oil on the felt & back together. Same less than impressive spark & same results.

*pop*

Ryan and I took turns on it. I finally decided to work smarter, not harder.

As I said before, I didn't have the actual condenser in the shed, so I did a little thinking. If it's not shorted, I can put one in parallel with it & still be OK... but where do I mount it?

Now, here is where I got intelligent. (I know, I should've warned you to sit first)

Because on this engine, the kill wire & the condenser hook to the same terminal at the points, I took a jumper wire from the kill wire at the switch and hooked it to a condenser I mounted external to the tin... Took all of about 15 seconds. 1/4 wicked spark instantly & a running engine.

Now I know that I need to (stop being so darned cheap &) buy a condenser for it, but this "Bypass" will be in my bag of tricks from now on. It won't help if it's a shorted condenser, but It's still a valuable tidbit for testing without having to pull a flywheel.

I hope this helps someone else in the future.

Thanks for the tip, If you lived in the south we would call that Redneck engineering. Will file that one as I'm to lazy to pull the rope that long. LOL

Alan, you should really pick up a multimeter with a capacitance range for measuring those suspect caps. PullPull ...test, replace, Pull... ahhh!.... running. No palpitations, gasping or wheezing required! Swearing is optional! :smile1: Great story and tip!
