A while back I did some computer work for a friend of ours. As I was fixing his computer we got to talking about tractors ( I also do his tractor repair). He said he had a tractor out at this guy's house that was supposed to be getting fixed but it also needed tires, he asked me if I wanted it, if so It was mine. Well I finally went out and picked it up. It is a Scott's built by JD.

It is kind of rough shape the hood is held on by a cabinet hinge and the Carb is off but it looks like I have all the parts to put it back together. The ignition switch is missing and the 3 of the tires won't hold air and one of the back one's leaks it out just about as fast as you can put it in. On the right side it looks like it may have caught fire because the dash is melted where the hood set's on it. But for free I can't complain.

I haven't decided what I want to do with it. I'm not sure if I want to fix it up or use it for part's.

Free is always good. Sometimes you have to just step back and ask yourself if it's worth fixing or would you be better off using it for parts.

I see a hot rod mower lurking under that hood. Bet you could get it up to 50mph with a little work.

I think what I will probably do is this next week I'll try and get the engine running and go from there on what I want to do with it. Either way I go with it, it's a good deal. I love Free!

Bill, I was given one of the Scotts tractor a year or so ago. It didn't run and had 2 flat rear tires. I cleaned the carb, got it running good, put tubes in the 2 tires and sold it on C/L few a healthy profit. Don't give up her yet Buddy. Good Luck

That is a nice engine for free. I hope you get a good runner or lots of parts. Brian's method might work too. Take the profits and get something you want.

I believe that's a Murray hood. Those Scott's had a fiberglass hood with a plastic grill. That model is sought after by mower racers, they make very good looking race mowers. The hoods are hard to find in good shape though. I don't believe that engine is original either all of them I have seen had V-twins on them.
Does that opposed have an oil filter on it?

Well you all were right. I talked to the friend who gave me the tractor and he confirmed that the engine on the tractor now is not the original engine. Apparently the original engine caught fire (hence the melted side of the dash board) and the put that one in it. Also the fire took out the hood but he wasn't sure where the hood came form but I'm inclined to agree with RoosterLew that it is probably off a Murray.

RoosterLew I haven't had a chance to check to see if it has an oil filter but I hope to start on it today. We have an unexpected visit from our Son's Grand kid's so that will take up some time.

Thanks RoosterLew, I may need it. I never got to it today, right off the wife found water under the bathroom sink, a busted drain pipe. Got that fixed then a fan went out so I fixed it and that's all I seem to do is go from one fixit job to the next. Maybe tomorrow.

Your's sure sounds sweet. :)

Nice sounding engine, Lew! Bill, hope the 'honey-do's' give you a break. I think you're a man in need of some GT time!
