I feel like I'm a lucky guy. My wife bought me a $300.00 John Deere 314 (1983) 14 HP Kohler Friday and then my oldest daughter called us and said she is in labor and she had her baby boy just after midnight on Friday( it was a good day), Mom and grandson doing great, but now back to the Tractor, It didn't run, but after a few hours of work, a new Head Gasket and draining water out of the fuel tank it stated up. it came with wheel weights and the bracket for a front blade. I need some information on how the Electric PTO work. The mower deck is running all the time, even with the PTO switch in the off position. i don't know if it is stuck or if they wired it up direct. i am going to try to inplug it to see if it stays on when i get back home tonight. The switch must somewhat work, because if i turn it on it wont start. If anyone has a manual for one i could use some of your info. Thanks!

Congrats on the 314. I have one as well and it's also a 83 but was not as nice as yours when I got it. The PTO switches are a known cause of problems in those tractors. I took the switch apart on mine and repaired it. sometimes the switch gets stuck internally in the on position which may be your situation. The other possibility, which is probably more likely, is that the previous owner modified the wiring to have the PTO on all the time. If you need an electrical diagram let me know by sending me a private message including your email address. I'll send you a copy.
Some other things to check are the motor mounts and the driveshaft couplers. If the coupler at the hydro end of the shaft gets worn it can wear out the input shaft and ruin the hydro. The rear motor mounts tend to go and if ignored the extra movement in the engine wears out the couplers.

Wow! That was a great Father's Day for you. Congrats on both counts! Hope you get the PTO fixed so you can take him for a ride later on!

That was a great fathers day. A new to you Tractor and a new Grandson can't bet that! The tractor looks like it is in pretty good shape so I think your wife got a good deal.

GREAT looking tractor ! $300.00 around here won't buy you much and certainly not a 314 JD.
Congrats on the Grandson and well wishes for both baby and mother.

I recieved a much needed new pair of work boots for around home.
