While out driving i stopped at a lawn sale and found this cub sitting out behind the guys garage he was mowing with a new one so I had to ask. he said he thought it had a bad motor but it ran. long story short bought it for 400.00. Got it home runs pretty good he thought motor was bad because it smoked ALOT. well i checked oil it was halfway up dipstick. so i changed it it runs no smoke but will only run with choke on. any ideas why??:confuse: Im not too good with carb work

Wow good Buy!

If its running on choke it means it's not getting enough gas... Check your fuel line and see if its comming out full stream. There may be something blocking the line.
Or your main jet may need an adjustment. Try turning your main jet counter clock wise about 1/2 to 1 full turn (which will allow more gas to enter) and see if that helps at all

Great buy. Just like Brian said, check the fuel line and filter, either the needles are adjusted too lean or they could be clogged or there could be an intake leak. Could also be a float adjustment but usually a float set too low would still make the motor run lean or it won't rev past a certain rpm.

Likely a lot of carb issues. The overfull block was likely the oil diluted with gasoline either due to a faulty needle valve & flooding the block, or if it has a vacuum fuel pump, the pump's diaphram may have a hole in it & the vacuum pulling fuel into the crankcase. Once it gave problems, he then parked it & everything has gummed up, causing lean mixture. I recommend pulling the carb apart & giving it a good cleaning. Make sure float is ok, and replace the float needle.
Can't make it out...what model is it?

its a 1641 if my memory is working tonight. i pretty sure the oil was his fault he said he it was low before it started smoking he showed me where low was on dipstick about halfway between hash marks.
and so he added 2 quarts.

2 quarts!!!!!! Dang, that might just make it smoke huh!:bigrofl:
Still sounds like carb needs a good cleaning, but not a bad deal at all!

Had the same problem on a old brigs the other day. Backed out the main jet and then set at 1 1/2 turns and it ran great. Might just be a little dirt that is obstructing the fuel flow.
