Do you think the spool isn't centering correctly with the handle released ?

I don't know if that would affect it or not. It almost seems like the lever doesn't move back far enough. If the rod slid back another 1/4 inch it would be more then enough. On the front the rod goes in as far as it is worn to a shine.

I wonder if the little cup that the spring sits in is worn on the inside . , I tried a search but didn't come up with any pictures ,Maybe I'll remove mine so we can see what that one looks like if we can't fine any info , Al

There might be a part number in my manual for the tractor. I know the spool has a tag on it but it is painted over.

I looked im my manuals and in the manual section but I could not find anything useful. Maybe your tag is still readable?
