But to answer your original question, YES, one could put on an external pump. The regulating valve is between the pump & the oil gauge pressure port. The way the oil flows through this valve, it would not work as a regulating valve with oil coming the opposite way, so the external pump would have to have a regulator on it.

Thanks Daniel and for those who haven't seen one, shown here is the cast block with onlt an 1/8 plug for a gauge- Daniel was it later or diff. specs?? where a cavity was milled out and top and bottom taps for a block-off plate, then the filter was added-or could be added.(In case somebody thought CLEAN oil was a good idea)P6130315.JPG P6130314.JPG

What make of engine are we looking at? An exploded view may shed some light on pros & cons.

---The EXPLODED view -? Its EXPLODED ALLright and the shinning light says don't buy/build any engine that the manufacturer wasn't smart enough to put an oil filter in !! :bigrofl: :bigrofl:

If all this had come up a month ago, I could have gotten some pics of mine with the filter to go with these.

My Onan has an oil filter. Never been inside it yet, but I plan to pull the heads before long. I want to see if it is a 16HP or 18HP.

I've been on a fact-finding hunt about these and I think the ONLY way to be sure is pull the heads and measure the stroke.

That's the same conclusion I have come to, Lee. Hope you get something figured out on yours!
