Would you happen to have a picture of the old coil? And do you have any other numbers on the engine. Even numbers on the DB tractor would help.

I have found in searching the more numbers you have the better the results.

Pictures are always good, a lot of times I find things for sale that an owner has no clue what it came off.

If you can get me more info, I'll do some searching for you.

MY bad! I just noticed your new hear!

Welcome to GTt!!! I know we have some great people on here that have DB's also. I'm sure they will be able to help you get these things back up and running again!

We had one when I was young, and I loved using that Beast!! I always had fun with the sickle bar and the plow blade.

Good luck on them!

Welcome to the forum. The coil for a model N Briggs should be the external 3 legged coil. They turn up on ebay oncce in awhile. I don't know the number right off but last I heard they were not available from the briggs dealers and weren't being reproduced in the aftermarket.

I just found the parts list for the Model "N", I then got the parts list for a Model "5S" They used the same magnetos. The part number is 291617,
Like Doug said they no longer make these.
But I am going out to the shop now, I do believe I still have a spare good Magneto for one of my 5S Engines.
I am going to go see if it is the same one.

Well I thought I had a spare for you, But I couldn't find one.

I'll check at my fathers when I go there.

I checked Ebay and found nothing yet.

Just keep searching the number I gave you and do searches for Briggs Model N and 5s.

Good luck.

Welcome rustbarn to GTtalk , I just bought 2 DBs this year both odler ones like yours , one has a newer 5hp B&S and the other is a N like yours that doesn't run yet , weak spark sometimes no spark at all then a nice spark . going to try either new points and condenser or one of those Mega-Fire modules .and a few other things I need for it One of our site sponsers has some parts for the N . Seems to be a good amount of DB guys here that will be able to help you out , they did for me , Al

If you haven't located a coil by the weekend let me know, by PM and I will check my friends stash of parts engines, I should be able to pull a three legged Briggs coil for you. He is a big DB fan so will be glad to share to get another DB up and running.
