Just picked up this 1960 wh suburban 550 with the h55b engine! I have been looking high and low for the lauson/clinton engine and finally scored this beauty.

Nice horse for a 1960 model! May be a bit tough to turn though!

Anyone know what type of recoil starter the h55b used? I am in need of that and a steering wheel.

I think I have the recoil. I'll look for it tomorrow. Nice 550! Take good care of that Techy! They're worth a small fortune when running and near impossible to find a replacement.

Funny side story. In high school I had a 71 chevelle and while cruising around somehow the throttle cable broke, long story short I was able to drive it home by using a pair of vise grips I had and clampming the cable to the pedal lol

That looks like a great survivor! Congrats on the acquisition!! I've never seen one with the choke and throttle in that configuration.I recently came across an H55B Lauson / Tecumseh that a friend bought at an auction that will go on my '61 551. It has the original recoil starter on and I'll get some pics for you ASAP, but I'm keeping that. I may have an extra steering wheel to fit it yours. I'll have to look at the one I have and see if it's the right one (and then try to get it off LOL).

If you have one let me know. I would be interested in buying it if it's for sale. I have been wanting this engine for a long time but was never able to find one. The starter works great but I don't want to keep a battery in it since I plan on restoring her someday (after my 58' ride a matic is done).

I would be interested in the steering wheel if you have an extra. Let me know if you want to sell it! I would love to see pics of your 551!

I just had to run up to the barn and take the pics for you tonight!
Here's the front view of the recoil.
IMAG0369.jpg
Here's a side view of it.
IMAG0371.jpg
As you can see it's a heavy cast aluminum construction. Very sturdy!
Oh, and I was wrong. Mine's an H55A, but the recoils should be the same. Mine's missing the starter.
IMAG0370.jpg IMAG0372.jpg
Here's the only picture that I have of the 551??? I swear I took some more, but I can't find them. As you can see, mine's a little more colorful than yours LOL

I have acquired a good set of the right front wheels and a spare axle and steering gear for it too...and now I have the engine!
...About the steering wheel, PM sent.
