I removed the deck from my 318 over the weekend for some maintenance. I discovered the weld holding the arm to the shaft was broken and therefore both arms are free to rotate on the shaft. I hadn't noticed any problems when I last mowed, and I'm wondering the purpose of the weld. Any ideas what effect on function whis broken weld will have? Here is a pic for reference:

Hey coopduc:

I wonder if the deck might move side to side too much, but that's just a guess? Someone else here will likely have a better answer. But, I would say they likely had it welded it for a good reason.

Back when I had a 140, I had the same problem and did get it rewelded. Had a Welder guy just down the road a couple of miles. Sadly, he passed away a few years ago.

coopduc,
I looked at my 140 deck today and one side is not welded to the round bar and does nor look like it ever was. The other arm is welded to the shaft.
