What a day. I spent all morning hauling stuff down to our show. I still had work to do on the B10 so I dedicated the afternoon to working on it. I have it all back together but it wont start. I told myself check all the simple things first. So I did, no luck. Then I decided that since it would not start and I was getting blow back in the carb it had to be timing. I pulled the motor out and took the shroud off and re timed the mag. I checked the points and re adjusted them, nothing was off much but I had to check. Put it back in the mower and hit the started expecting it to fire, no luck. Ok so did I not get the timing marks lined up? I could take the side cover off the motor with it in the frame and I checked, it was timed right. Now what? So I double checked the carb and found everything open and working fine. Then I wanted to check the valves so I took the cover plate off and checked the clearance 8 and 18 just what the book called for. So I decided if I sat and stared at it long enough I would figure it out. No luck so I called a friend of mine and asked him to come over. We went over what I had done and he said it has to be valves because it is blowing back through the carb. So off with the valve cover again, then off with the head. He thought the intake was not closing soon enough and wanted to take a few thousands off the valve. Now if you have ever taken the valves out of a B&S 10HP you know what a pain those keepers are. It is hard enough on the bench let alone in the GT. But we took it out and ground a little off the valve. We spent the next hour putting those little keepers back in. Then put it all together and tried to start it. No luck same thing. Now keep in mind we did all this to a motor that has been painted and clear coated. We both were stumped, what could be wrong? I turned it over on more time and both of us were watching the flywheel turn and looked up at each other at the same time and said, "it is going the wrong direction". DUH!!! I had bought the starter generator from a Simplicity dealer and he said it came off a B10 and would work. He never said what direction it would work. My friend said he had a starter laying around at home and went to get it. We put it on turned the motor over one time and it started right off. 10 hours later my B10 was running. A little carb adjusting and it was purring just fine. I guess that was one of the simple things I forgot to check.
So I put all the side panels on and got the hood to fit and put the mower deck on. Some touch up on the paint and tomorrow it will be ready for some pictures. Now what do I give this guy for all his help. I owe him big time except for making me take that valve out with those stupid keepers.
I hope to have pictures posted tomorrow if the weather is nice.

Dan, that sounds like something I'd go through. Glad you finally got it figured out. They don't seem to want to work so well going backward. All I can say about the friend is be there when he needs help!

I got up early to take some pictures in the morning light. It is now completed and I want to thank everyone that helped me out with information or parts. Johndeereelfman helped me with a lot of missing parts and that made the restoration much easier. I have 142 hours in it plus the time for research and who knows how much time I spent on that.
This is a great site and everyone is so helpful, what a great hobby. Thanks.
