Hey Doc, no worries, had some and worked through 'em, anytime you stop by is a good check in. if I were to go with the ebay option, couldn't I likewise inherit a unknown bag of 'heylookie'? sellers' not likely to post pics of the guts..yeh?

Yeah thats a Good point
You can always ask our site sponsor Bob (Bhts) and see if he has any good used ones in stock.

Not sure if the part number you are looking for is 1715635, but I see this one on ebay if you just want the gear.

http://www.ebay.com/...R-/310318426772

You would still have to hunt down the other parts.

That sucks. I was not sure which mower deck you had so that was the part number from mine. It was worth a shot.

The surgery did not go so well tonight. I could not get the 2 set screws lose from the pulley. I rounded my allen wrench so I think I will need to get another one. I also broke the tip to my propane torch the other day so I could not apply any heat. :( I didn't try and get any further than that because I have to replace that seal. No point it tearing into the rest of it. If I can get some heat and a new allen wrench I will give it another shot.

Bolens used 2 different style gears on the gear boxes. You have the older style "straight" gears. Later on they switched to a better designed "slanted" gear Posted Image

The 1713664 was a part number that was used with the 32'' Decks, the 38 and 42'' used part number 1715635.
They Should interchange but I have never had a gear box apart on a 32'' deck so I cant be 100% sure if they are the same

I recieved some clarity on part and I'm starting to think it may work, manuals show same part used for snowcaster also. Worth a check.

Sorry to hear about setback, cooler head will prevail, approach like a puzzlebox rather than demolition job if possible. On 2nd thought, I don't think you need bother those set screws, as shaft will slide out with it. If memory is right the action is near that gear (those are decoys unless there's some business you have with the pully inerds )

The gear boxes used on the sno-casters and mower decks had the same components in the housing, so if you find a good gear box off an old sno -caster that would work as well.

Many people get confused by the deck measurements, The decks are measured in cutting width (Not overall Length)
Looking at your pictures, you have a 32'' Deck.

so technically I could use same gearbox on either(seasonal swap?) that would be cool..

No, The shaft location and sizes are slightly different. You can interchange parts between the two but its not a simple "bolt it up and go" procedure.

I don't need to take the pully off now, but will when I paint it over the winter I wouldneed to . I just wanted to make sure it was all losened up. I was going to get into the rest of the box but wanted to let the penetrating oil try and work it's majic and I had to give my daughter a bath anyways. I will work on it some more tongiht. I need to inspect the inside gears at any rate and hope nothing is broken.

It's been a while, two developments on this 16T gear: A. snowcaster gear is a direct match 1713664. :bounce: B. #1715635-ordered on ebay, has a slightly longer shank... :( doesn't quite fit, FYI, someone had to try it.

Can't you just shorten up the shaft?
