The PTO belts have to be exactly 42.5'' for proper operation. I have used the 43'' belts and all they do is slip, the 42'' belts are too tight and the PTO constantly spins.

Meant to get back sooner on the pto belts. My 42" belts work fine as long as I have the lower belt guard on. I was missing my lower guard and the pto did run all the time but when I took the guard off of my 1256 and put it on my 1050 they worked fine with plenty of adjustment. Without the guard the belts are running in too much of an "oval" shape but the guard does a nice job of straightening it out so the pto shaft doesn't run anymore when it's idling.

I ordered the started belt as I have a v belt and it squeals and slips a little.

Thanks for the links and info.

I've had good luck with belts from JayDee Enterprises.

Here is a listing for belts by OEM part number, including Bolens.

Hello to all, am the owner of a Bolens ride a matic with the Kohler 7hp engine (guessing a `59 or 60 but happy to be set right). It has served well for years but when last serviced the belts were changed for ones that are totally wrong. I don`t have the old ones to work from so would really appreciate if anyone can tell me what drive belts I need to get hold of. We have the trailer, grass cutter and a roller for it and apart from massive belt slip it runs well. thanks daveG

Do you happen to know the exact model number?
They used different size belts depending on model and year. Some pictures would also assist in identifying the year and model.

If you go to the Bolens Ride-A-Matic section of the Manuals forum, you may be able to identify your tractor by comparing the manuals for the various model tractors. Link: http://gardentractor...5-ride-a-matic/

If your tractor is like the one in your avatar, it is a 1959 (model 230), a 1960 (models 231 & 232) , or a 1961 (models 233 & 234).
...[models 232 and 234 were equipped with electric starters at the factory.]

The 1958 (model 220) had a "rounded" front grille, as compared to the "squared" front grille of the models listed above.

Once you know the model of the tractor and attachments, or the Bolens part numbers for the belts, someone will probably be able to advise what the correct size belt(s) is(are).

Thanks for the replies, it is the tractor in the avatar. It did have an electric start that was removed years ago. The plate with the nos. is hard to read but I will see what i can get from it.

I was wondering if it is better to get a 43 inch belt or 42 inch belt for the pto? I am having trouble finding a 42 and1/2 belt. Any information on this matter will be greatly usefull. Thanks

You may want to check with member wilberj

I believe he has a loader on one of his 1886 and could possibly tell you the correct size to get.
