George, I can't remember for sure, but I think I determined that the neutral

safety switch was defective, and that's why it wasn't hooked up when you

got it. I could be wrong here, but look at that switch first.

I think you might be right with it being defective. I did put the continuity tester on it and couldn't get a reading to ground but I think it is to be wired inline with the wire going to the starter solenoid. I need to check to see if there are two terminals on the switch and put the continuity tester on it and see if the switch is good. If it isn't any good I will try and find a suitable replacement. Good thing is the neutral detent on the forward / reverse control lever is pretty good and if it is in neutral it will stay there. Just if it gets bumped towards reverse she is going to go full bore.

I gotta try and figure out what size the starter generator belt is. I am out of adjustment for the one that is on it and it doesn't always grab the motor to spin it over. I should have got the belt number off of the old one to cross reference. I could have stopped on the way home and got a new one.

Looking at that dash, this must be an early 12 because the cover plate you see by the throttle - the HD-10 had their hydraulic control handle was on the dash and not to the side like the HD -12

I think it would have been nicer with the control lever in the dash. Kind of weird reaching down to the side where it is at.

I took a short video of the Bush Hog idling in the garage. I put a stack on it and I think I am taking it off and putting the stock muffler back on. This thing seems like it is twice as loud as my Massey with the stack. I gotta mess with the carb adjustment. It is running rich on the top end. Only problem is I think there is only one adjustment for the fuel mixture. I ran out of daylight till I was running it and will mess with it more tomorrow.

Here is the video:

George, the high speed main should be on the bottom of the fuel bow, with the low speed air screw on the top, next to the throttle stop screw.

There's no adjustment at the bottom of the fuel bowl. Just the nut holding the bowl on. If I am not mistaken I might be able to get an adjustable jet kit? I am going to mess with the low speed needle and see if i can get it to clear up and see how it runs. I want to retorque the head tomorrow and I will run it some more. I will give it about an hour run time and drain the oil and put fresh back in it.

George, post a closeup pic of the carb when you get the time.  Seems odd for this old an engine to be fitted with a preset main with no way to adjust.

Mine has the adjustment on the bottom of the carb. Can take a picture if you want? Does yours have a model number on it? I can verify that as well.

Sounds like I may need to get a new carb or see if I can get the highspeed adjustment for it. If you can give me the model number on your carb that would be great. I think there is a number on mine but I will have to look for it tomorrow.
