Got charcoal going for burgers.  I didn't feel like messing with it, but Teresa had been looking forward to grilled burgers all day.  So tired or not, she gets grilled burgers, as she deserves it! She supports everything I do, so grill is hot & almost ready for the hamburger now.

I had a propane grill for several years, but charcoal is the way to go for flavor.  I rarely grill due to being too tired & lazy to bother, but when I do, I'm always glad I did.

So far done the morning milking & fed silage.  Been making out farm bill payments the last little while.   Was time to dry off 5 cows this morning, so they are dry treated & waiting in a pen to be put in the dry cow field.  They have to wait till cow #16 is brought in with her new bull calf.  Had a new baby heifer calf die on us during the night.  She came in fresh born with bloody scours.  Not usually survivable.  Rainy here today, so may clean on the farm shop till time for me to milk again tonight.

Why do you dry off cows?

Cows are dried off about 60 days prior to calving.  This gives the cow time to rest & finish developing the calf, for her mammary glands to "heal" & restore themselves, and it also is a time to condition her before calving.  They are also on a different diet, which helps all this to happen.
