I have a 1053 that I rescued from the scrap pile last winter. It would lock up when pushing it so today I decieded to go through the axle end play adjustment steps to see if that would solve anything. When trying to loosen/tighten the axle nuts I noticed a funny clunking sound coming from the rear end, so off with the cover. Not happy with what awaited me. Both spider gears and one bevel gear is junk. What would cause this, excessive endplay? All the top shaft gears look new and one bevel gear looks new as does the worm and bearings. I got a bunch of extra trans parts with it that the PO claimed were leftovers from a trans overhaul. I'm not into it much, but I'ver never heard it run. I just re-rebuilt the carb as the PO didn't have a clue how to do that right either. The engine has compression. Im into it a carb float seat, starter belt, air cleaner, and spark plug. Everything else in the trans looks good with the exception of all the metalic sludge in the housing. I imagine it's worth fixing but parts seem to be NLA. I found some spider gears on ePay NOS and Joe's has a 1256 differential assembly complete for sale. Will the 1256 set fit in and work? Does anybody have any parts around? How do the spider pins come out?

Are you sure you had the free wheeling pin out when you were trying to push it?

I am quite certain those gears were worn down due to having too much slop in the axle from the previous owner not making the necessary adjustments. Many people never adjusted the end play and the result is the gears would not mesh properly and wear down like in your pictures.
Bolens recommended that the adjustment be made every 50 hours of operation.

If you havent already, Take a look in our manuals section. There are parts lists and service manuals available to download.

Most parts from a 1256 will NOT fit the 1053 as the 1256 were hydrostatic drive and the 1053 was gear driven.
Since parts are pretty pricy to buy separately you may be better off finding a good used transmission to replace your old one with. Usually you can pick up a decent transmission For around $75- $150, as buying single gears can run well over $100 each.
I will post the models that used the same transmission as the 1053 so you can start looking if you wish to go that route:

Models that used the 6 speed transmission: 1000.1050.1053.1054.1220.1253.1254.G14

Yes, I had the free wheeling pin out. If I tried to push it you could go a couple feet then the trans would lock. Pull it backwards a foot and it'd roll again.

That definitely sounds like it was due to the axle end play not being adjusted properly

Well it took an afternoon of obscenities, a few bucks in seals but it finally went back together. Problem now is everything's tight on the left side but it still has a bit of endplay. Is it possible to put the bevel gears in the wrong sides? About ready to hang this one back on Craigslist

Can you get some pictures of the transmission?
Maybe one of us can spot a problem
