Unless I missed something,that slot in the gear shift is to keep the shifter from turning.
Ok That would make sense, because the shifters are curved on the 1054 and if they were able to rotate then they would be hitting the seat when trying to shift. Since the older models used a straight shifter, It really doesn't matter if the shifter turns.

so i guess i need some type of half moon deal , ican not find it any of the manuals and i don't think it was there when i took it apart .

Check out the parts manual at: http://gardentractor...33-bolens-1053/
Look at part # 37 and part # 117 in the diagram on page 2.
One is a roll pin and one is a dowel pin.
I suspect (but I'm not certain) that the dowel pin is held captive between the upper and lower flanges, and fits in the slot in the chassis to keep the gear shift from rotating.
The diameter of the dowel pin will probably match the width of the slot in the gearshift ball. .... The length can be easily determined.
