We have started a small flock of chickens in the backyard. Last august we got 8 silkie chickens and one frizzle chicken, all day old bantam chicks. We lost one early on but the others have done well. We got straight run chicks and have 3 roosters and 5 hens. I built a chicken coop in the backyard and bought a 12 foot round wire corn crib and cut it down to 8 foot high sidewalls and use that as a gazebo/chicken run. Today we got our first 4 eggs from the hens. Banty chicken eggs are quite small, you would probably need a dozen to make one omlet!
Silkie chickens are prone to going " broody" and make very good mothers and love to sit on eggs and hatch them.
This is a picture of our coop .
The corn crib is to the left of the coop
Here are a couple of pictures of the chickens when they were about 3 1/2 months old
