We have started a small flock of chickens in the backyard. Last august we got 8 silkie chickens and one frizzle chicken, all day old bantam chicks. We lost one early on but the others have done well. We got straight run chicks and have 3 roosters and 5 hens. I built a chicken coop in the backyard and bought a 12 foot round wire corn crib and cut it down to 8 foot high sidewalls and use that as a gazebo/chicken run. Today we got our first 4 eggs from the hens. Banty chicken eggs are quite small, you would probably need a dozen to make one omlet!
Silkie chickens are prone to going " broody" and make very good mothers and love to sit on eggs and hatch them.

The corn crib is to the left of the coop

Here are a couple of pictures of the chickens when they were about 3 1/2 months old

I have some silkies also, I have some crossed with a silver bright,I like banty eggs pickled. It seems the pickling brine goes through them much better then my extra large eggs. Thanks for the pictures! Shawn

I have a friend who raises chickens. He's also a member here, but isn't on frequently. He has several different varieties of bird and I can't tell the difference between them LOL. He sends eggs home with me on occasion and they're very colorful! I thought this thread would be a good place to post a pic.

Our silkies have produced 14 eggs so far since they started laying. They will be 6 months old the end of the month.
