Well I am going to tackle my garden tiller. Spruce it up a bit. What color of red should I use? Plus is this tiller age appropriate for 1964 bolens 900? I know it fits because i had it running a couple months ago and plan on using it this spring. Is everything red including the tines? Anything special i need to know about these units?

Yes, the "round back tiller" is the correct tiller that was used on the 900 when it was new. Yours may have even been on a 900 or similar due to the fact it has the older aluminum ID plate.

The red used was the same color used on the rims of the Bolens 1050 as seen in the picture:
I found rustoleum "Regal Red" is a real close match.

Well here are some photos of tearing down the tiller. cover is off and boy did i have a hard time getting the pto shaft off. Had to get the torch out and heat it up a little and used a hammer on a crow bar to pound the shaft off the key. I scraped the "dirt and rust" off with a putty knife and then used a degreaser on the universeral joints. Used a tooth brush to get the grease off and then wire brushed some jointed areas. Started the air sander to take off rust and some paint. Since I am going to use this this spring I am not going to sandblast it to perfection. There was a lot of white paint on the tines. 90% white with some red onthe outside tines. Were all the tines red? Is the whiteish color original primer?

If there is white on the tines , you have a very early model red Tiller(around 1964-1965)

interesting, would model number help? The gear box is red but the shaft coming out of it was white, the inside tines all show white but the outside ones have red on them. I will add more photos of the tines and let you see what you think Brian. I like thelooks of the white under the red, and i also assume this white is the same as the canvas white? Do you have any other photos of the early model one?

If you have the model number of it that may help, I can look in my books and see what year that model shows up.
I'm leaning more to its a 1964 as the 65' brochure shows the tiller and tines being all red

Just the tines were painted white,
The red tines you have most likely are from the tine extension kit that may have been added once the white tines were NLA.

ok here is the model number. 18610 02. I think you are right on the extension. The 3 tines on that side have red on them the rest are white and show no red color at all. Is the regal red still good for the earlier model? In the photos the 64 looks to be a little lighter in color. hits of orange, not a deep red. Whats your opinion on that? Also the drive shaft was a darker red then the tiller cover.

Well I sanded, I wired brushed, sanded some more and said gee I am going to use this thing in the garden! How pretty do you want to make it? Most of the paint will waer off in the garden, So guess what? She got a couple coats of primmer today. I feel the lighter red paint matches better then the regal red for this unit after seeing the photo of the 64-65 tiller.

I'd use a lighter shade for that tiller since you have an older model. Bolens basically made slight changes to their paint changes yearly.

Well my gut told meto go with the bright red made by velspar. Just so happened I had 2 cans on hand from a preveious prodject. I think this color is real close. Had the wife verify it so we know its right. lol. Took the Regal red back to a different Lowes and they did not even carry that color red. Now I know why everyone is going to Menards around here. Now to let the red dry good and tomarrow I have to make a special trip to a different town to get more Canvas white. Lowes don't carry this color eaither.
