About an hour ago we awoke to a foul smokey odor and were on a rampage to find the origin. I luckily spotted a clamp on lamp that had fallen off of it's perch onto the carpet, smouldering. I picked it up by the cord and Dad poured some water on the area, then cut the carpet out to find the wood floor burned, which he poured water on as well. We are working on airing out the house right now... it's going to be a while...

The lamp had a spot light type of bulb in it and that was in direct contact with the carpet. Be careful guys. We got lucky and woke up... it could have been way worse, and we will be fixing the smoke detectors tomorrow....

Check your smoke detectors as well.

A few years ago,a buddy of mine woke up to smoke and the start of flames right at the head of his bed.The fire was put out with not too much damage, but you'll never guess what started it. His lamp was plugged in to an outlet at the head of his bed,and the cord had chafed through on the head board.

Wow Maynard, talk about scary. I just know I get up in an hour... and I won't be able to sleep... The odor throughout much of the house (this room is ok) is so foul it makes me sick to my stomach...
I am feeling alright now, so hopefully by work I will be good shape... Hope to heck I can be productive today... I know I'm not going back to sleep tonight...

Sorry to hear of the fire, Casey! I have to take apart a ceiling fan light and see what's up with it.

It wasn't a fire yet, but it was smouldering a good bit... it wouldn't have been long...

It had burned thru carpet, foam, and linoleum. It was enough to scorch the wood floor beneath it. It could easily have been there half an hour...
Today while I am at work Mom and Dad are going to go thru the house and check for hazards, which are few.. if any.
That lamp had been clamped where it was for well over a year, never would have guessed it. Somehow it managed to fall and land without breaking the filament in the bulb, and land bulb down.. crazy..

Casey, very glad to hear everyone is OK.

Scary stuff. I had a clamp on on my headboard for a while. Got tired of the cat knocking it off. Thankfully it was never on when it happened.

Sorry to hear of your close call but I am relieved that no harm was done. Would be interesting to know the cause of the lamp falling.
Take care.
