After several hours of painful, boring research, that red/brown "rusty" material on that peice in your e-tank is Ferric-Oxide-Fe2O3. After tank time and the disassociation of H2O at the cathode, some black residue left is Ferrous-Oxide (FeO --loss of Oxygen), Magnetite. A little clean-up and either prime immediately or watch it rust again. Sometimes this isn't convenient because we may have more pieces to clean first. Here's some info as how to slow down the re-rusting-just submerge your part in cold coffee or tomato juice. The following site : iron explains.

In summary, a cold solution of a low pH-(acidity) will prolong re- rusting from 10 to 100 hours or longer.
From my acidity scale (lower the pH to higher the acidity), from 7 = neutral
6- Urine, 5-Black Coffee, 4- Tomato juice, 3-Orange Juice, 2-lemon juice.
" Since pH is logarithmic, a change of 1 on the scale is a change of 10-fold difference in hydrogen ion concentration".

Now, the disclaimer. I haven't personally tested this YET.

You'l notice I skipped suggesting testing with pH6.:bigrofl:

Sorry Kenny, I forgot to mention that I prime it first-before any body work--then sand, work the dents, clean, prime, sand--etc.,etc. over and over til its done. This piece is the hardest so far (remember M12 under a tree). I probably have 30 hrs in the fender pan and still have to wet sand with 2000 grit.--Lee :wallbanging:

I was just wondering how you got the coffee off. Thus far, when I have pulled a piece out of the E-tank, I wash with soapy water, rinse, dry and apply a coat of Rustoleum Rust Reformer. That takes care of it until I'm ready to apply primer/finish paint.

I haven't tried coffee yet to store it in 'til its ready. Like you, I've been washing, drying etc. but wipe with thinner and prime immediately. My earlier problem was I had too many cleaned parts at one time. I could have spaced it out some though to avoid the flash-rusting-(or submerge it in coffee).

Brings a whole new meaning to the phrase, doesn't it? :bigrofl:

I leave mine in the same solution as what's in my e-tank. Have had very good luck with this.

I will cook them, put them in another container with the washing soda / water in it & keep cooking. When I get enough done to make a decent cleanup & prime session, I get them all off & make one big mess instead of 10 little ones.

The Rust Reformer may be a good choice. Can you prime right over it? Had to run to the shop to see what I had used--Its Loctite "Extend" rust neutralizer. I didn't like it because it sprays a stream rather than a fan spray-can't control coverage very well with it--Lee

That may be the best solution to re-rust. I've had good luck with it too. I guess my problem is when I start the cooking/cleaning/priming cycle someone always interrupts and it may be a day before I get back to it.

I can only drink so much any more. Got an overdose of caffeine years ago and have to watch the intake now days.
Lee, you can sand/scotch brite it and prime right over it. Seems to be pretty good stuff, have it on my Cub hood that was rusted pretty bad. I sanded it, used a wire wheel, coated it. Been that way for 2 years now, no rust showing.

So, if I pile all the parts that just came out of the Etank, in the urinal, that should cut down
on the theft of the mints, as well as stall the re-rusting? LOL

Seriously though, this is a good thread, and great info.
I always find myself, cleaning up more then I should, and scrambling to get it protected.

Gotta try Kenny's method.

Yeah, interruptions are a fact here too.

I got half a moldboard done & got a phone call, then had to leave. Decided it was better to drop it back in the tank than leave it out. Next nite, pulled it out, dried it off & kept going.
