Daniel, sorry to hear of your pain, I am finally done hurting my hands this year..

Cut the back of one knuckle on a piece of sheet metal... down to the bone... 11 stitches for that..
After my finger was 90% healed I fell through a ceiling skinning a few fingers on the opposite hand on a joist as I fell 4 feet to a safe landing.
Then a week after that I tore some skin off my thumb with a piece of metal.
There was a point after all that where all my finger/hand injuries left me with just 3 uninjured fingers!

Good luck with your thumb.

A man's thumb is like a "hammer magnet"! And man does it hurt when that happens!

Finger and hand injuries are really painful IME. My wife pinched one of my pinky fingers between 2 large rocks one day while we were trying to remove one of them from a hole. I almost threw up it hurt so bad. It wasn't broken because most of the impact was at the end of the finger. The nail was destroyed though and it burst open. I'd keep a close eye on that thumb. Ice it if it's swelling for 20 minutes then at least 20 minutes before more ice. That may help with the pain. It could be a long night if that's broken!

Like I tell my kids, "No problem. it's three feet from your heart." and like they tell me "Shut up Dad.".

I mashed one finger a bit today while working on TD&H's JD212. Lucky I didn't mash it too much....just sore, and the nail will stay intact.

Now you know where the phrase "sticks out like a sore thumb" comes from.

I did nearly the same thing to my thumb years ago, took 11 stitches to close it up. Course, I had a 6 lb. hammer I smacked it with. Got it all closed up, came home and finished getting that axle kingpin out. You are right, that hurts. Scar is still plain as day. That was about 40 years ago.

I did something similar to my pinky finger a couple years back. The only brick chisel I had was old and the handle was shortened from years of being "mushroomed" over. Had to extend the pinky against the wall to get a good grip on it. Hammer glanced off of the chisel head, then rolled the finger into the block wall! Took all but about 1/8" of skin off of the entire last joint of the finger! Took forever to heal! Hope yours isn't broken and heals up quickly!
