I have the engine apart on the 8 to install a new head gasket, carb kit and repair wiring to the generator coil under the flywheel. This engine has had a short block replacement in the past. The short block looks like it was painted black and the paint is a mess, flaking off. The head is also black. So what color would the original engine block have been painted? I am thinking flint grey, but if that's the case then the head has also been replaced.

Flint grey is right. Likely the whole engine was replaced.

Thanks guys! It's definitely a short block. The serial no. tag tells me that. Head must have been replaced as well.
